October 30, 2026 — Today, we celebrate the theatre of the mind!
Across the globe, writers, actors, directors, musicians, sound designers, producers, and listeners are celebrating World Audio Drama Day, an occasion dedicated to the extraordinary art of telling stories through sound.
From the earliest days of radio theatre to today's independent audio fiction podcasts, audio drama has continued to transport audiences into worlds limited only by imagination.
Why October 30?
On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air presented their legendary adaptation of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. That historic broadcast helped demonstrate the extraordinary power of storytelling through sound.
Seventy-five years later, in 2013, audio drama advocate Patience "Sibby" Wieland helped establish Audio Drama Day to honour that anniversary and celebrate the medium.
In 2014, the celebration gained further international momentum, with The Sonic Society's Jack Ward establishing a World Audio Drama Day Facebook community and working alongside advocates including Sibby Wieland, David Jarvis, Sonia James, Pete Lutz, and Fiona Thraille to spread the word.
What began as a celebration of radio drama's remarkable history continues as an invitation to discover the creativity flourishing in audio storytelling around the world.

How can you celebrate? Here at Mutual Audio Network, we believe that great stories belong to everyone. Every day, our community of creators demonstrates that you don't need a screen to experience an extraordinary adventure.
To everyone who writes, performs, produces, shares, preserves, and listens to audio drama:

Happy World Audio Drama Day!
Listen and Imagine... Together!
